Michael Burnham encounters Booker and Tarka at a black market exchange, and the two compete to acquire a dangerous resource.
The Federation has a potential disaster on its hands. Cleveland Booker and Tarka left with the prototype spore drive and now plan to destroy the DMA despite the vote of the Federation and allied worlds. Although President Rillak orders Michael not to search for Booker and Tarka, Admiral Vance commands her to find him within the scope of her current orders. This brings Booker and Burnham to the same place outside of Federation space as Booker and Tarka look for isolynium in order to build a device capable of destroying the DMA. There are high stakes as they compete for the illicit substance, and naturally it all gets settled…over a game of poker.
