As part of our year-long discussion of Return of the Jedi in celebration of its 40th anniversary, we take a detour to discuss how James Kahn’s novelization enhances the movie.
It is no secret that 2023 marks the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. Each month on Podcast Stardust we devote an episode to discussing a 10-15 minute segment of Return of the Jedi in detail. On one such segment, Ross Hollebon of the Album Cockpit Podcast brought up details from the novelization, written by James Kahn. This inspired us to read the novelization, and on this episode of Podcast Stardust, Ross returns to discuss some of the details we noticed and how it enhances the movie for us.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Whether the novel enhances our experience with Return of the Jedi,
- The Emperor’s fear of Luke Skywalker and his power,
- The inner thoughts of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and the Emperor during the confrontation in the throne room on the Death Star,
- How Leia’s confrontation with Jabba the Hutt is enhanced,
- The additional pleas of the Rebels on Endor when trying to convince the Ewoks to help them fight the Empire,
- Additional details from the assault on the Death Star,
- Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker’s final thoughts before Vader died, and
- Other details that stood out to us from this novelization.
