Stamets works with a new scientist on a theory about the DMA while a colony facing destruction is in its path. Burnham seeks to rescue prisoners left behind.
When Federation starships approach the DMA, something unexpected happens: it disappears and then reappears 1,000 light years away four seconds later. This discovery sheds new light on the possible origins of this threat to the galaxy. Ruon Tarka, a brilliant if not abrasive scientist, comes aboard Discovery to work with Stamets on an experiment that might give Starfleet the clues it needs to answer the danger posed by the DMA. However, the DMA is now threatening a new civilization, and Captain Michael Burnham and the crew must evacuate the citizens. While they do so, they face an ethical dilemma about what to do with six prisoners left behind to die.
