Warp Trails #111: Discovery – “Red Directive” & “Under the Twin Moons” – 0501 & 0502

by Warp Trails

Star Trek: Discovery is back for its fifth season with a mission that is over 800 years in the making that might involve the very forces of creation.

Star Trek: Discovery has returned with its fifth and final season. The first two episodes were released at the same time, and we are ready to break them down on Warp TrailsDiscovery appears to have ditched the “mystery box” form of storytelling this season and immediately tells the viewer that the power of creation is at stake with two former couriers discover and run away with a journal that might lead to the power of the Progenitors, the beings that are responsible for humanoid life across the galaxy. Changes are coming to the U.S.S. Discovery on top of that in the way of key crew members and assignments. Thanks for joining us as we come back from our extended hiatus to discuss this new season of Discovery.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How this season of Discovery appears to break with the “mystery box” format of prior seasons,
  • How this mission ties into Star Trek: The Next Generation and other classic Star Trek lore,
  • Captain Michael Burnham’s relationship with Cleveland Booker,
  • The new antagonists, Moll and L’ak,
  • Captain Rayner of the U.S.S. Antares and our evolving feelings about this new character,
  • Saru’s decision to leave Starfleet and other major events in his life, and
  • Some of the other great action in these two episodes.
