Chancellor Palptaine and the Jedi Council create conflict within Anakin Skywalker as they each appeal to his loyalty and duty against the other.
Anakin Skywalker is one of the most powerful and capable Jedi in the entire Order. His mentor, Chancellor Palpatine, knows this. So too does his Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the rest of the Jedi Council. Currently, the Jedi Council and the Chancellor are at odds with each other over the power Palpatine wields, the direction of the war, and Palpatine’s interference in Jedi business. So, when Palpatine appoints Anakin to the Jedi Council as his personal representative, it creates friction. When the Jedi Council then asks Anakin to spy on the Chancellor for them, this creates a conflict and frustration for Anakin. All of this is captured in sequential scenes from Revenge of the Sith and is the subject of the next installment in our series examining the movie for its 20th anniversary. That isn’t all though. This segment ends with Palpatine telling Anakin the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise.
