In our second installment of our series looking at Star Wars parodies, we are looking at TROOPS, the first Star Wars parody of the digital age.
We previously discussed the granddaddy of all Star Wars parodies when we discussed Hardware Wars. In our second installment of “Laugh it up, Fuzzball!” we are discussing the parody that launched the digital age of Star Wars parodies. TROOPS was released in 1997 as a not only a parody of Star Wars, but also as a parody of the popular online documentary series COPS. In this episode of Podcast Stardust, we look back at TROOPS and its history and what it tells us about Star Wars.
You can find TROOPS online here.
In this fully armed and operational episode of Podcast Stardust, we discuss:
- The backstory of TROOPS,
- The talent that brought this parody online,
- COPS and how it influenced this Star Wars parody,
- Some of the details of the parody, and
- How this parody explains two scenes from A New Hope differently.

Podcast Stardust is the fully armed and operational podcast inspired by the code name for the Death Star. Hosted by first-generation Star Wars fans, Dennis Keithly and Jay Krebs, Podcast Stardust endeavors to bring thought provoking discussion on recent Star Wars news on a weekly basis. Between news episodes, Dennis and Jay review the latest episodes from Star Wars television covering everything from Resistance, Rebels, and The Clone Wars to The Mandalorian and other live action productions on Disney+. Of course, Podcast Stardust wouldn’t be complete without thematic discussions, top ten lists, and interviews on everything from Star Wars literature, comics, and the films themselves.
