Our discussion of The Phantom Menace for its 25th anniversary continues with a discussion of Amidala’s call for a vote of no confidence in Valorum’s leadership and the dispute about training Anakin as a Jedi.
The Jedi have safely delivered Queen Amidala to Coruscant from Naboo after their adventure on Tatooine. Now, Amidala must plead her case to the Republic Senate in the hopes of intervention in the Trade Federation blockade and invasion. However, Senator Palpatine cautions her that corruption has taken hold of the Senate, and any relief or intervention is unlikely. Palpatine’s prophetic words prove to be true, and Amidala heeds his advice by calling for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum’s leadership in the hopes that a new chancellor will aid her people. Meanwhile, Qui-Gon Jinn makes his report to the Jedi Council and asks that Anakin Skywalker be tested as a potential Jedi candidate. This creates another controversy. We are discussing all of this and more in the latest entry in our series examining The Phantom Menace for its 25th anniversary here on Podcast Stardust.
In this fully armed and operational episode of Podcast Stardust, we discuss:
- Senator Palpatine briefing Queen Amidala on the state of the Republic and how he planted the seeds for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum,
- Qui-Gon’s report to the Jedi Council about the Sith and a vergence in the Force,
- Anakin Skywalker’s attempt to say goodbye to Padmé after the Queen “sent her on an errand,”
- Queen Amidala’s call for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum at the Senate,
- Qui-Gon Jinn’s and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s conversation on the balcony outside the Jedi Council chambers,
