As the sun sets on another spectacular summer, we look back at the Hollywood blockbusters of olde! Big stars, bigger spectacles, long lines, popcorn, and movies that became events. We’re heading to the theater for a trip through the history of the summer blockbuster!
From Jaws and Star Wars to superheroes, animated adventures, and the biggest movies of the ’80s and ’90s, we’re guessing which films ruled the summer box office. Plus, Jay and Shua talk about what made going to the movies such a memorable experience and whether the true summer blockbuster can still happen today.

The summer blockbuster wasn’t always the centerpiece of the moviegoing calendar. We head back to 1975 and Jaws to explore how Hollywood transformed summer into the season of giant movies, huge audiences, massive marketing campaigns, memorable merchandise, and lines that seemed to stretch around the block.
Then we take a trip through decades of summer movie history as Jay challenges Shua to identify the biggest movies of each year. Along the way, we’ll revisit some beloved sci-fi adventures, superhero spectacles, animated classics, comedies, action movies, and plenty of films that made summer feel like the greatest time of year to go to the movies. So grab some popcorn, save your seat, and whatever you do, don’t forget to turn off your phone!
