Blondie and Pet Sematary

Blondie. It could be a nickname for a tow-headed child, an attractive woman, or even a light-colored baked treat. But Blondie is synonymous with the music sensation that gripped the world in the ’70s and ’80s with lead singer Deborah Harry. And then there’s Gage Creed, the blonde zombie toddler from Stephen King’s Pet Sematary.

read-along books

Read-Along Books were common lazy afternoon fodder for kids in the ’70s and ’80s. Fairy tales, classic stories, and lots of movie adaptations and franchises made their way to books sold with records or cassettes where narrators (with music, sound effects, and sometimes guest stars) read-along with you in your book.

Batman is 80

Black and white Batman, blue and grey Batman, black-armored Batman, even super-armored Batman — the Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader, half of the Dynamic Duo — Batman turns 80 this month and he has changed with the cultural climate in print, on TV, and in film over the generations. Join shazbazzar and JediShua for 77 minutes of fun and fandom centered around this archetype of law and justice.

Time After Time (1979)

George Lucas pushed to capitalize on cuteness after Return of the Jedi left theaters with two made-for-television Ewok features and two seasons of animated Endorians in Nelvana’s Ewoks. Both shazbazzar and JediShua love every incarnation of the little furry guys and share their appreciation for the tribe from Bright Tree Village before taking another trip through time in the dark comedy/love story/science fiction movie, Time After Time.

Bill and Ted TechnoRetro Dads

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure kicked off Keanu Reeves’s career, spawned a sequel, and filled Alex Winter’s mailbox with lots of notes from teachers. As the thirtieth anniversary of the movie approaches and a second sequel lingers on the horizon, shazbazzar and JediShua take a trip back to 1989 to reminisce and revisit this cult comedy.

RetroZap TechnoRetro Dads G.I. Joe

G.I. Joe was common vernacular for kids in the ’80s (and still is, though the kids have all grown up — or at least gotten bigger and pay more bills). From the toys to the cartoons, with comics and games, Hasbro’s G.I. Joe ran alongside Kenner’s Star Wars in the early part of the decade and really blew up (so to speak) when Star Wars toys disappeared from toy aisles. Join JediShua, shazbazzar, and Retro Joe Tavano for fun memories of the Real American Hero.
