Captain America: Civil War Trailer

Courtney shares some new thoughts on the amazing trailer for Captain America: Civil War!

“United we stand. Divided we fall.” The Avengers are divided, and war has begun.

The newest trailer for Captain America: Civil War was action packed, edge of your seat, can’t wait ’til May fantastic!

Although the trailer is only 2 minutes 24 seconds long, it gives fans a look at one of Marvel’s most successful comic book series turned into film. The superheroes are divided in the aftermath of massive collateral damage from the battles in New York, Washington D.C., and Sokovia. The public is afraid–how much damage and death will these heroes cause? Who is ultimately responsible?

The Avengers are no more–broken up, there are two warring factions. The group supporting government oversight and accountability: lead, surprisingly, by Tony Stark/Iron Man, and includes Black Widow, Vision, War Machine, and Black Panther. The second group is headed by Steve Rogers/Captain America, with the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Falcon, and the Scarlet Witch.

The trailer opens with Captain America talking about saving people…and we get a close of a captured Winter Soldier aka Bucky Barnes, Cap’s best friend. Obviously this is going to be a huge plot point in the film; Cap’s decision to free Bucky, who, as the Winter Soldier, had caused a ton of collateral damage, not to mention deaths, in the previous film. Also, is he indeed Bucky again in this film, or is he still brainwashed?

Following this brief scene, Iron Man chimes in with “We need to be put in check.” This is quite a surprise coming from Tony Stark, the man who, in Iron Man 2, refused to give his technology or help to the government. What has changed Tony’s mind, why is he for government oversight now? During this sequence the trailer zooms to an underwater hidden facility, which to me looks like a secret jail. Tony is inside the facility, looking around. He looks very resigned (and beat up) – is this his ultimate answer on how to contain rogue superheroes who won’t accept the government oversight?

Cut to a heated scene with Steve and Tony talking – here they are discussing some form of accountability and obviously not agreeing. And that could be an understatement. Tony is downright pissed at Cap. As they talk the trailer goes to shots of the Winter Soldier fleeing Black Panther, and in another scene he’s attacking Tony (and almost shoots him in the head!). Again, I think, these visuals confirm that Bucky/the Winter Soldier is a main catalyst in pitting the Avengers against one another.

The next shot is more action, and perhaps a bit of tragedy. War Machine gets shot down. He appears unconscious, if not dead. I love this part of the trailer; there are four face shots simultaneously of Rhodes, Stark, Barnes, and Rogers–the four men this film is probably going to focus heavily on.

As the trailer progresses it gets more intense. More fight scenes, more dynamic dialogue. The look Iron Man gives Captain America just before he backhands him is superb. So much hate in that look. There’s glimpses of fighting between the Black Panther and Winter Soldier, Black Widow taking on troopers, the Scarlet Witch taking down Vision (whoa!), and Ant-Man riding on an arrow shot by Hawkeye towards Iron Man. So. Much. Action.

The final scene pits Iron Man against Captain America in an all-out brawl. I don’t want to see either hero go down, but someone’s going to lose that fight. Cut to the two separated sides of heroes, sprinting towards one another in what will be an EPIC battle. It’s so intense that it makes you hold your breath. Fade to black.

Then the last few seconds of the trailer gives a surprise (unless you’ve read the comics). Spider-Man. And he’s shown up for Team IronMan. The slightly snarky “Hey everyone” he says is perfect Peter Parker. The spider suit looks great, with a more animated mask than in previous films. I can’t wait to see how Tom Holland does as Spider-Man. Overall it’s a great way to introduce a new actor in the role–put him in a can’t fail Avenger-centric film.

This movie will be tremendous. So, whose side are you on?
