The Audette Set: January 18, 2016

Mike’s here to recap all the biggest Star Wars stories from the past week!

Leia, Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars stories

By Mike Audette //  What week that was! There was a comic announcement, Star Wars Rebels news and a trailer, a Lucasfilm Story Group addition and some unfortunate passings. Let’s get the bad stuff out of the way first. While David Bowie and Alan Rickman never had direct ties to the Star Wars universe, their craft and artistry has influenced–and will continue to influence–future generations of artists, actors, and creators for decades to come. Cancer is a bitch. May they rest in peace and may the Force be with them.

Now let’s get to the good stuff.

Poe Dameron ongoing comic series. I repeat. POE DAMERON ONGOING COMIC SERIES!

On Thursday Marvel announced that starting this April we will be getting an ongoing series about the best freakin’ pilot in the galaxy, Poe Dameron. This series will be following the conclusion of and replacing the Kanan series, which will end after its 12th issue. The creative team behind the comic is nothing short of amazing. It’s written by Charles Soule, fresh from his work on Lando and the current Obi-Wan & Anakin miniseries, with artwork and coloring by Phil Noto, who illustrated the Chewbacca miniseries as well as all of the young reader books for Journey To Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Poe has skyrocketed into fan-favorite status and this comic is no doubt going to be a hit. The guys and gals over at Marvel know what they’re doing.

Also from Thursday was this year’s announcement of the 88th Annual Academy Awards Nominations. The Force Awakens has received five total nominations: Film Editing, Original Score, Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. While I’m not one to be into awards and award shows in the least, I do wish the best of luck to everyone involved in what made The Force Awakens such an amazing experience.

The Lucasfilm Story Group gained a new member this week with the addition of Matt Martin who is joining from the StarWars.com staff. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Matt on many occasions over the past year and I’m positive he will be a great mind in the ongoing development of the ever expanding Star Wars Saga.

And, saving the best for last…

On Friday, Star Wars Rebels blew everyone’s collective minds into oblivion. The season two mid-season trailer just dropped bombshell after bombshell. Vader and Ahsoka, Yoda, the “Old Master,” a crossguard lightsaber, Princess Leia, a new Inquisitor, Clone Wars characters’ return, and new locations. So much to be explored in the rest of the season where there will be, by the looks of it, not an ounce of filler in sight. Everything going forward is going to have ramifications and that is something that is critically important to the brilliance of storytelling. Dave Filoni is a national treasure, nay, international treasure and deserves to be honored for eternity.

Do Not Read Until You’ve See the Rebels Midseason Trailer

The “Old Master” is Darth-freakin-Maul and I am so happy about him being back. Sam Witwer is a genius and should forever be employed in Star Wars in one form or another.
