by Podcast Stardust

Industrial Light & Magic create lava for Mustafar, undead pirates for Pirates of the Caribbean, and a digital car escape from aliens in the last episode of Light & Magic.

We have reached the final, at least final for now, episode of Light & Magic. In this episode of Podcast Stardust, we dive into some of the stories shared by the artists at Industrial Light & Magic and how they brought undead pirates to life for Pirates of the Caribbean, animated Davy Jones’s tentacles, and created the lava flows on Mustafar for Revenge of the Sith. There are a lot of behind the scenes stories to discuss, and we are sharing our favorite moments and takeaways here.

In this fully armed and operational episode of Podcast Stardust, we discuss:

  • The legacy of George Lucas as discussed by many of the visual effects artists at Industrial Light & Magic,
  • The influence of Ray Harryhausen on ILM,
  • How the lava was created for Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith,
  • The creation and use of digital doubles for stunts in Revenge of the Sith,
  • The work done on Pirates of the Caribbean,
  • How Davy Jones was created for Dead Man’s Chest,
  • The creation of Rango and how the ILM artists became storytellers, and more.
